BOOM BRAKE

 

  • Boom Brake controls the horizontal and vertical movement of the boom. It allows the boom to safely move from one side of the boat to the other.
  • The aim is to slow down the movement of the boom when it switches sides (due to gybing or tacking) rather than completely preventing the movement of the boom, as it is the case with gybe preventers.
  • All that is needed to be done following the installation of boom brake is to tighten the rope. The tightness of the rope will determine how fast the boom will move from one side to the other.
  • Boom Brake provides stability to your boom as well as allowing the boom to move from one side of the boat to the other in safety and with comfort.
  • Boom Brake allows the sailors to have smooth goose wing sailing.

INSTALLATION

 

  • Boom brake must be connected to the boom using a swivel.
  • Boom brake should be connected at a distance from the mast which is equal to the one-third of the boom length.

 

  • One end of the rope which is to be used to control the boom brake should be connected to a chainplate where the shroud terminates at its bottom end or to a becket or to a similar structure. Then, the rope should be passed through the boom brake (3 rounds) before it is passed from a pulley which is in alignment with the location where the rope is tied. Lastly, the rope should be brought to cockpit.
  • The free end of the rope can be tied to a winch; or alternatively a block and tackle system can be formed.
  • As the tightness of the rope is increased, the speed of the movement of the boom from one side of the boat to the other will decrease.
  • The location where the rope is tied and the location where the pulley is situated must be as close to the bulwarks as possible.
  • These locations should also be as aligned as possible with the mast linage (hypothetical line which passes through the mast and cuts through the boat vertically).
  • The rope used should be a rope with minimal stretch.
